Liggett, Jueneman, and Olson Shine at 2025 KSHSAA 1A State Track Meet

The KSHSAA Class 1A State Track & Field Championships concluded Saturday at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium with standout performances and thrilling finishes that showcased Kansas’ top small-school talent.

Girls Highlights

Ness City’s Taegin Liggett was one of the meet’s most dominant sprinters. The junior captured the Class 1A 100-meter dash title in 12.25 seconds, outpacing Clifton-Clyde’s Sevy Wurtz (12.47). Liggett also finished runner-up in the 300-meter hurdles (44.82) and anchored Ness City’s championship 4×100 relay (49.60), joined by Sienna Brenner, Issy Fuchs, and Hannah Younger.

Hanover senior Anna Jueneman put on a show in the mid-distance sprints. She won gold in the 200 meters (25.56) and 400 meters (58.72), and anchored Hanover’s 4×400 relay to a title (4:04.29). Teammate Gracie Bruna contributed heavily, finishing runner-up in the triple jump (37-02.00) and third in the 400 meters.

Ellis junior Avery Boydston was dominant in the distance races, winning both the 1600 (5:13.83) and 3200 meters (11:23.93). She narrowly edged Pretty Prairie freshman Lauren Detter, who placed second in both events.

Other girls’ champions included:

  • Kylie Stapleton (South Gray) in the 800 meters (2:16.44)
  • Addy Goeckel (Washington County) in the 100-meter hurdles (15.21) and 300-meter hurdles (44.65)
  • Sevy Wurtz (Clifton-Clyde) in the long jump (18-02.00)
  • Hutch-Central Christian’s Jessa Losew in the high jump (5-08.00)
  • Lillie Weiser (Onaga) in the pole vault (10-06.00)
  • Havana Olander (Little River) in the triple jump (37-09.50)
  • Natalee North (Ellis) in the shot put (40-07.75) and discus (138-01)
  • Jesse Hoover (Washington County) in the javelin (154-07)

Osborne won the 4×800 relay (9:49.08), with Addison Poore anchoring a deep squad that also scored in the 800 and 4×400.

Boys Highlights

Frankfort’s Carter Olson delivered the meet’s fastest sprint times, winning the 100 meters (10.83) and taking third in the 200 meters (22.30) behind co-champions Aaron Shadid (Wichita-Independent) and Brock Deterding (Kiowa County), who tied at 22.23.

R.J. Allen (Ingalls) blazed a 49.42 to win the 400 meters, while Caleb Durst (Lebo) edged out Ness City’s Broxton Gall to win the 800 (1:57.84) and finished runner-up in the 1600 and sixth in the 3200.

Other top boys’ performances:

  • Broxton Gall (Ness City) claimed the 1600 title (4:29.51)
  • Kaleb Arnold (Olpe) won the 3200 (9:50.87)
  • Landon Schmitz (Axtell) swept the 110 hurdles (14.72) and 300 hurdles (38.86)
  • Axtell’s Brandon Schmelzle took second in the 400 (50.31)

Shadid also won silver in the 100 (10.87), capping a strong state meet for Wichita-Independent.

Team Impact

Ness City’s depth in the sprints and relays contributed to a strong overall showing on both the boys and girls sides, while Hanover, Washington County, and Ellis also made significant impacts across multiple events.
