Ellinwood’s Reagan Wirtz, Richmond-Central Heights Distance Crew Dominate at 2A State Track

The 2025 KSHSAA Class 2A State Track & Field Championships wrapped up Saturday at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium with record-setting speed and distance-running dominance highlighting the competition.

Freshman Phenom Reagan Wirtz Shines for Ellinwood

One of the meet’s breakout stars was Ellinwood freshman Reagan Wirtz, who exploded onto the state scene with three individual golds. Wirtz swept the 100 meters (12.24), 200 meters (24.98), and long jump (18-01.00) — the best leap in Class 2A — showcasing versatility and poise beyond her years. She also helped Ellinwood to top-five finishes in the 4×400 (5th, 4:11.76) and 4×800 relays (2nd, 9:59.76).

Richmond-Central Heights Sweeps Distance Events

Richmond-Central Heights pulled off a remarkable sweep of the boys’ distance races. Cody Hammond led the charge, winning the 800 (1:56.61) and 1600 meters (4:25.21) and placing third in the 3200 (9:44.84). Teammates Connor Burkdoll and Owen Miller finished right alongside him, making it a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1600 and top-three finish in the 3200, where Burkdoll took first (9:40.72) and Miller second (9:44.43).

Kaden Elmore Stars for Moundridge

Moundridge senior Kaden Elmore had a phenomenal meet, winning the 400 meters (49.27) and placing third in the 100 (10.99) and third in the 200 (22.05). He helped anchor Moundridge’s 4×400 relay to gold in 4:05.25, and contributed to the team’s top-four placement in the 4×800 (4th, 10:01.53).

Camryn Gourley, Emily O’Brien Lead in Hurdles

Camryn Gourley, a freshman from Hoxie, showed poise with a state title in the 300-meter hurdles (45.74) and a runner-up finish in the 100 hurdles (15.34). Emily O’Brien (Whitewater-Remington) edged her in the 100 hurdles with a 15.20 mark and took second in the 300 hurdles (45.95).

Madison Howland Leads Smith Center

Smith Center sophomore Madison Howland completed a rare distance triple, winning the 800 (2:16.23), 1600 (5:03.47), and 3200 (10:57.06) with commanding performances, helping Smith Center place strongly in team scoring.

  • Julia Kilgore (Sterling) won the 400 meters (56.40) and took second in the 200.
  • Paige Schlyer (Hays-TMP-Marian) won the discus (129-10) and took third in shot put.
  • Alexa Weiser (Oakley) captured the triple jump title (36-01.50) and placed second in long jump.
  • Inman won the girls 4×100 (50.03) behind a young, fast squad.
  • Wabaunsee girls took gold in both the 4×800 (9:45.89) and 4×400 (4:09.44) relays, led by Payton Wurtz and Grace Zeller.

Sprints and Relays Explode on Boys’ Side

Ashton Gratton (Pleasanton) owned the sprints, blazing to titles in the 100 (10.78) and 200 (21.68). Kyson Proffitt (Jackson Heights) followed closely behind in both events, finishing runner-up each time.

Sublette’s Caleb Friesen and Phillipsburg’s Tanner Horinek dueled in the hurdles, with Horinek claiming the 110 hurdles (14.68) title and placing second in the 300 hurdles to Friesen.
