Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation in Topeka

Topeka, KS – Law enforcement authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Friday morning in Topeka. The incident, which resulted in the surrender and uninjured apprehension of a male suspect, prompted a request for investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI).

According to Topeka Police Department (TPD) spokesman Daniel Garrett, officers were dispatched to a domestic disturbance call at a residence in the 1500 block of SW 24th Street just after 11:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2025.

Just before 1:00 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2025, officers attempted to make contact with the suspect. Police reported that after announcing their presence, the individual began firing from inside the home. Officers then discharged their weapons in response.

The suspect, an adult male, subsequently surrendered to officers at the scene and was taken into custody. He was not injured during the exchange, and a firearm was recovered from the scene.

In adherence to standard policy, the Topeka officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave. The TPD has formally requested the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to lead the independent inquiry into the shooting. Further details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
