Hill City Hosts Mid-Continent League Track & Field Meet

HILL CITY, KS – Hill City High School was the site of the Mid-Continent League Track & Field Meet on Thursday, May 15, 2025, where athletes from across the league competed in a full slate of events. Several athletes delivered outstanding performances, with Norton Community and Ellis High Schools leading the way in individual events.

Boys Highlights

Norton Community’s Tyler Backman dominated the sprints, winning both the 100-meter dash (10.80) and the 200-meter dash (22.25). His teammate, Ayston Kats, showcased his endurance, taking first in both the 800-meter run (2:02.16) and the 1600-meter run (4:34.22).

Smith Center also had a strong showing in the distance events, with Mason Enochs winning the 400-meter dash (51.46) and the team taking first in both the 4×400 meter relay (3:31.11) and the 4×800 meter relay (8:25.73).

Phillipsburg’s Tanner Horinek was the top hurdler, winning the 110-meter hurdles (14.45) and taking second in the 300-meter hurdles (39.51), behind Smith Center’s Carson McKelvey (39.44).

In the field events, Phillipsburg’s Kayden Hudson won the javelin with a throw of 199-10, and Ellis’s Aron Bencze took first in the discus with a mark of 166-3. Norton Community’s Logan Willour won the shot put with a distance of 58-1. Plainville’s Eric Mackey and Russell’s Tegan Kuntzsch tied for first in the high jump (5-10). Phillipsburg’s Tanner Horinek also won the long jump (22-6.5), and Trego Community’s Tripp Hudson won the triple jump (45-1.25). Norton Community’s Jace Bailey won the pole vault (12-6).

Trego Community High School won the 4×100 meter relay (45.20).

Girls Highlights

Ellis High School’s Evelyn Merriman was a standout on the girls’ side, winning both the 100-meter dash (12.31), 200-meter dash (25.82), and 400-meter dash (1:02.95).

Smith Center’s Madison Howland won both the 1600-meter run (5:13.32) and the 3200-meter run (11:31.53).

Hoxie’s Camryn Gourley won the 100-meter hurdles (15.37) and the 300-meter hurdles (48.26).

Ellis High School’s Isabella Eck won the high jump (5-4). Oakley’s Alexa Weiser won the triple jump (35-10), and placed second in the long jump (17-3.25), behind Oakley’s Jade Beckman (16-10).

In the other field events, Ellis’s Natalee North won the discus (141-5), and Thomas More Prep-Marian’s Piper Simpson won the pole vault (10-6).

Norton Community High School won both the 4×100 meter relay (51.11), the 4×400 meter relay (4:13.36), and the 4×800 meter relay (10:00.71).
