Firefighters Battle Hours-Long Blaze at Hutchinson Landfill

HUTCHINSON, KS – Fire crews spent several hours early Tuesday morning battling a significant outside fire at the Hutchinson landfill. The blaze, which erupted in a designated disposal pit, required a coordinated effort between firefighters and landfill personnel to bring under control, according to a media release from the Hutchinson Fire Department.

Just after 2:30 a.m., emergency responders were dispatched to the landfill following reports of a possible fire within the area known as the “Pit,” a section utilized for waste disposal. Upon arrival, crews encountered a fire that had already grown to an estimated 200 feet by 300 feet.

Firefighters worked in tandem with landfill staff, employing multiple bulldozers and front-end loaders to systematically scrape away the burning debris. This process allowed the separated materials to be effectively smothered and fully extinguished. Fire crews remained on the scene throughout the morning, diligently working to eliminate any remaining hot spots and ensure the fire was completely out.

Following the landfill fire, the Hutchinson Fire Department issued an important reminder to residents regarding the safe disposal of lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are increasingly prevalent in various household electronics.

“With the increase in lithium-ion batteries in our households, they need to be disposed of properly,” the department stated. “Please locate your closest lithium-ion battery recycling drop-off location and dispose of them there instead of in your household waste containers.” This reminder highlights the potential dangers of improperly discarding these batteries in regular household waste.
