Tampa, FL – The Kansas City Royals snagged a 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night, powered by a strong pitching performance from Michael Lorenzen and timely hitting. The win halted the Rays’ five-game winning streak and marked Lorenzen’s 50th career victory.
Lorenzen (3-3) pitched six solid innings, allowing just one run – a solo home run by Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero in the fourth. After the homer, the right-hander found his groove, retiring nine of the final eleven batters he faced. The Royals’ bullpen then locked down the game, with three relievers combining to shut out the Rays over the final three frames. Carlos Estévez earned his eighth save of the season.
Offensively, Freddy Fermin led the charge for the Royals with three hits and an RBI. Salvador Perez drove in the game’s first run with a two-out double in the opening inning, bringing home Jonathan India. In the second, Fermin’s single to right field allowed Drew Waters to advance to third, setting up Kyle Isbel’s sacrifice fly to extend the Royals’ lead. Fermin added an insurance run in the ninth, singling home Maikel Garcia after shaking off an earlier scare when he fouled a ball off his hand.
For the Rays, Caminero was a standout, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and falling just a triple short of the cycle. However, his efforts weren’t enough as the Rays struggled to capitalize with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-4 in those situations. Starter Taj Bradley (2-2) pitched well for Tampa Bay, giving up two runs on five hits over seven innings while striking out two.
Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. continued his impressive hitting streak, extending it to 20 games with a single in the eighth inning. This is the longest hitting streak in the majors since José Iglesias’ 22-game stretch in September 2024.
Looking ahead, Royals left-hander Noah Cameron is slated to make his highly anticipated major league debut on Wednesday against the Rays. He will face Tampa Bay right-hander Drew Rasmussen (1-1, 2.10 ERA). Pregame coverage will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Superstar Country 102.5 FM & 1530 AM KQNK, with the first pitch from George Steinbrenner Field scheduled for 6:10 p.m. CDT.
