WICHITA, KS – The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for a large portion of central and south-central Kansas, with moderate to heavy snow expected. The watch is in effect from late Monday night through late Tuesday night.
The affected area includes the following counties: Russell, Lincoln, Barton, Ellsworth, Saline, Rice, McPherson, Reno, Harvey, Kingman, Sedgwick, Harper, and Sumner.
Cities within the watch area include Wichita, Salina, Hutchinson, McPherson, Great Bend, Newton, Derby, and Wellington, along with numerous smaller communities.
Total snow accumulations are forecast to be greater than 4 to 6 inches, with winds gusting as high as 35 mph. The combination of snow and wind could create hazardous driving conditions, particularly on bridges and overpasses. The National Weather Service warns that travel could be very difficult and is likely to impact both the Tuesday morning and evening commutes.
Residents are urged to monitor the latest forecasts for updates. The National Weather Service advises considering delaying all travel. If travel is absolutely necessary, motorists should drive with extreme caution and consider taking a winter storm kit. Kits should include items such as tire chains, booster cables, a flashlight, shovel, blankets, extra clothing, water, a first aid kit, and anything else needed to survive if stranded.
