ATWOOD, Kan. – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for portions of northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska, including cities such as Atwood, Hill City, Colby, and McCook. The warning, issued by the National Weather Service, is in effect from 6 PM this evening to 6 PM CST Wednesday.
The affected area includes the Kansas counties of Rawlins, Decatur, Norton, Thomas, Sheridan, Graham, Logan, and Gove, as well as Red Willow County in Nebraska. Other communities within the warning zone include Quinter, Grinnell, Oakley, Hoxie, Norton, Grainfield, and Oberlin.
Heavy snow is expected, with total accumulations between 4 and 8 inches. Snow accumulation will begin after sunset this evening, with the heaviest snow falling tonight and early Wednesday morning. The snow is expected to end from west to east by noon on Wednesday. While strong winds are not anticipated, easterly to northerly winds at 10 to 25 mph may cause periods of blowing and drifting snow. Wind chill readings as low as 15 degrees below zero are expected from this evening through Wednesday morning.
The National Weather Service warns of dangerous travel conditions. Travel delays are likely along the Interstate 70 corridor in northwest Kansas tonight and Wednesday morning. Residents are urged to delay all travel if possible. If travel is absolutely necessary, motorists should drive with extreme caution, be prepared for snow-covered roads and sudden changes in visibility, and leave plenty of room between their vehicle and the vehicle ahead. Drivers are advised to avoid sudden braking or acceleration, be especially cautious on hills and turns, and ensure their car is winterized and in good working order.
