Authorities in Reno County are currently investigating the origins of a house fire that occurred in a rural area of Kansas. The incident took place shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, prompting the dispatch of fire units from Pretty Prairie, District 8, and District 9 to a residence located in the 26,000 block of South Sandcreek Road, as reported by Reno County Emergency Management on social media.
Upon arrival, the fire crews discovered an abandoned structure emitting smoke from the roof, alongside grass fires on both the eastern and western sides of the property. Additionally, two small storage sheds were found to be fully engulfed in flames, complicating the situation for the responding teams.
Firefighters initially attempted an aggressive interior attack; however, the fire’s location in the attic made it challenging to access. As the fire progressed and a portion of the roof partially collapsed, the crews shifted to a defensive strategy from the outside. Given the extreme heat and humidity, personnel were frequently rotated for rehabilitation, and additional manpower was requested from Cheney Fire. Ultimately, it took two hours to bring the fire under control, and the residence has been deemed a total loss.
