Lyndon's basketball team, led by coach Michael Massey, aims to secure their first state championship. Despite foul issues, the team's strong performance led to a 63-56 victory over Sacred Heart. In a well-fought match, Lyndon's balanced offensive and defensive play sealed their spot in the finals, challenging Moundridge for the title.
Cunningham's basketball team, led by Luke Albers and Will Wegerer, displayed fearless and relentless play in their historic journey to the state championship game. Despite facing adversity, Cunningham rallied to upset the top seed and secure their spot in the final. Lebo, aiming to improve on last year's runner-up finish, overcame offensive struggles to secure their return to the title game.
Goodland's Brady Brumbaugh, inspired by the girls' championship, led the boys to a 55-38 win over Southeast of Saline. Goodland aims for its first title since 1959, facing Wellsville next. Meanwhile, Wellsville dominated Beloit 68-49, eyeing its third state championship. Gillins led Wellsville with 20 points.
South Gray defeated Olpe 68-62, earning a spot in the state championship game for the third time in four years. Senior Dominic Martin's 24 points propelled the Rebels, who will face Lawrence-Bishop Seabury in the final. Olpe's 10-0 run in the third quarter was not enough to overcome South Gray's lead.
Riverside's 53-45 victory over Valley Heights secures them a spot in the 2024 Class 2A girls state championship game, seeking redemption from their 2023 loss. Led by senior Taylor Weishaar and Niahla Duncan's free throws, the Cyclones prevailed despite Valley Heights' strong second half. Wichita Independent's 48-40 win over St. Mary's Colgan secures their first title game appearance.
Lebo girls' coach Gardner keeps the previous year's defeat in mind, motivating the team to make a comeback. After defeating Wallace County, they are set for a championship game rematch with Hanover. Hanover's overwhelming pressure led to a 56-28 win against Northern Valley, setting up a rematch of last year's title game with Lebo.
Goodland's girls basketball team, known for its ability to win close games, suffered a 31-40 defeat against Hesston. Hesston's stifling defense held Goodland to a season-low score, securing the victory. Hesston's focus on strong defense and improved second-half performance led them to the win and a spot in the championship game against Silver Lake.
In the Class 1A Division I semifinals, the Frankfort girls displayed a stellar defensive performance against South Gray, securing a 47-31 victory and reaching the state championship for the first time since 1981. Led by Hattie Gros, they closed the game with a 22-4 run. Little River also secured a win, maintaining their perfect season record.
Sterling's seniors, Carson Gray and Gabe Riffel, led the team to a 57-43 victory over Plainville in the Class 2A quarterfinals, securing a spot in the state semifinals for the fifth time. They dominated the paint, outrebounding Plainville 43-27 and outscoring them 40-16 inside. The team will face Moundridge next.
Goodland, the two-time defending champion, faced a tough challenge from Girard in the Class 3A state quarterfinals. Despite trailing at halftime, Goodland staged a comeback fueled by Marie Martin's game-winning shot. Silver Lake and Hayden also secured victories, advancing to the semifinals. Hesston's Kendal Brueggen's standout performance led her team to victory over Cheney.
Northern Valley's journey, from a 1-8 start to the brink of a state championship, is a triumph. Despite losing a key player to injury, the team's determination and resilience shone through in a 49-42 upset win over South Haven. Facing defending champion Hanover next, the Huskies continue to defy expectations.
In the Class 1A Division I quarterfinals, South Gray's Allie Reed scored 27 points in a 58-29 win over Atwood-Rawlins County. Frankfort forced St. John into 19 turnovers to secure a 51-34 victory. Additionally, Little River defeated Olpe 61-44, and Centralia beat Norwich 52-30. South Gray and Frankfort will advance to the state semifinals.
The Southeast of Saline basketball team, despite a challenging regular season, proved their worth in the playoffs with a hard-fought 54-51 victory over No. 2 seed Cheney. Led by Gannon Jacobson's 24 points, the Trojans demonstrated their resilience and belief in themselves. Southeast will face Goodland in the semifinals. Beloit also secured a spot, defeating Hayden 56-42. Wellsville advanced by defeating Ellsworth 48-38 and Goodland dominated Riverton 68-46.
Valley Heights secured a 52-35 upset victory over undefeated Wichita County, showcasing their strength in defending the perimeter. The Twin Valley League team's exceptional performance was attributed to their rigorous regular-season competition. Led by coach Jordan Broxterman, Valley Heights advances to the state semifinals, prepared to face last year's runner-up, Riverside.
South Gray overcame a slow start to dominate Canton-Galva in the Class 1A Division I boys quarterfinal, setting up a semifinal showdown with familiar rival Olpe. Olpe fought off Clifton-Clyde to secure their spot in the semifinals. Bishop Seabury easily defeated La Crosse and will face Quinter in the next round.
