HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State University announced today it will pause its NCAA men’s and women’s golf programs effective immediately.
This decision follows a comprehensive evaluation of Tiger Athletics’ portfolio and resource allocation, aimed at preserving the long-term financial stability and competitive strength of the athletic department.
“Pausing our golf programs was an incredibly difficult decision,” said FHSU Director of Athletics Dr. Lisa Goddard McGuirk. “The rapidly evolving landscape of college athletics presents financial challenges that require immediate, proactive management. These challenges are not unique to FHSU, but they require that we look critically at our resources.”
FHSU remains fully committed to supporting all affected student-athletes. The university will honor all existing golf scholarships for the upcoming 2026–2027 academic year.
“Our golf student-athletes and coaches have done a tremendous job representing FHSU on and off the course,” Goddard McGuirk added. “To support them through this transition, we are honoring their athletic aid and providing dedicated guidance. We hope they choose to continue their education at Fort Hays State, but we are fully prepared to assist them if they decide to pursue their athletic careers elsewhere.”
“Our priority remains safeguarding our core educational mission, while navigating a challenging budget environment and a recent $2.4 million reduction in state funding. The pause on our golf programs represents a step in a series of difficult, necessary budget reductions,” said FHSU President Tisa Mason.
