CLEVELAND – In a contest defined by biting cold and dominant pitching, Brayan Rocchio provided the late-game heroics to lift the Cleveland Guardians over the Kansas City Royals, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Progressive Field.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Rocchio lined a single into right field off reliever John Schreiber. CJ Kayfus, who had reached on a lead-off single and moved to second on a walk to Bo Naylor, sprinted home and beat the throw from right fielder Lane Thomas to seal the walk-off win.
A Historic Defensive Effort
The Guardians’ pitching staff was the story for much of the afternoon, combining to surrender just a single hit to the Royals. It marked Cleveland’s first one-hitter since August of last season and their first at home since May 2023.
Cade Smith earned the win in relief, retiring the side in order in the ninth to set the stage for Rocchio’s walk-off.
Game Highlights
- The Lone Royal Spark: Kansas City rookie Carter Jensen provided the only offense for the visitors, launching a solo home run off a Gavin Williams cutter in the second inning. It was Jensen’s second homer in as many games.
- The Debut: Cleveland second baseman Juan Brito impressed in his Major League debut, finishing the day 2-for-4.
- Kwan’s Clutch Knock: Steven Kwan tied the game in the fifth inning with an RBI single to left, scoring Austin Hedges.
Chilling Conditions
The game was moved up five hours to avoid sub-freezing evening temperatures, but the afternoon start offered little relief. At 33°F (0.5°C) at first pitch, it tied the record for the coldest game in Progressive Field history, matching a 2018 mark set against Detroit.
