Arizona Dominates Kansas to Clinch Share of Big 12 Title

TUCSON, AZ — In a high-stakes showdown between conference heavyweights, No. 2 Arizona exacted revenge and secured a piece of history. Behind a balanced attack and explosive second-half surges, the Wildcats defeated No. 14 Kansas 84-61 on Saturday, clinching a share of the Big 12 regular-season title in just their second year in the league.

The victory moves Arizona to 27-2 overall and 14-2 in Big 12 play, while the Jayhawks fall to 21-8 (11-5).

A Game of Runs

The contest was defined by Arizona’s ability to manufacture massive scoring bursts that left Kansas reeling. Early in the game, the Wildcats exploited the Jayhawks’ smaller lineup with a staggering 19-0 run. The onslaught was so intense it forced Kansas head coach Bill Self to burn two timeouts in just over a minute.

Kansas struggled to find the bottom of the net during the drought, missing nine consecutive shots as Arizona built a 37-19 lead. However, the Jayhawks showed resilience late in the first half, tightening their defense to hold the Wildcats without a field goal for the final 3:52, cutting the deficit to 39-28 at the break.

Peterson’s Effort Falls Short

Freshman sensation Darryn Peterson was the lone bright spot for Kansas. After handing Arizona its first loss of the season back on February 9, Peterson once again rose to the occasion, scoring a game-high 24 points.

Peterson’s scoring helped Kansas whittle the lead down to just two points midway through the second half. However, the Jayhawks simply had no answer for Arizona’s depth once the Wildcats recaptured the momentum.

Wildcats Pull Away for the Title

With the game hanging in the balance, Arizona responded with a decisive 19-2 second-half run to put the contest out of reach.

  • Jaden Bradley was the catalyst, scoring eight straight points during the stretch.
  • Koa Peat provided a massive emotional and physical boost, returning from a three-game absence (lower-leg injury) to chip in 12 points.

The win marks a milestone for the Arizona program as they assert dominance in their new conference home. For Kansas, it marks their third loss in the last five games as they look to find consistency heading into the postseason.

Up Next

The Jayhawks won’t have long to dwell on the loss. They remain on the road to face Arizona State this Tuesday as they look to bounce back and solidify their seeding for the upcoming Big 12 Tournament.
