Local Wrestlers Advance to State; Sub-State Basketball Pairings Set Across Area

Area wrestlers are headed to the state tournament after strong showings at regional competition over the weekend.

At the Beloit Regionals, Beau Bussman and Keagan Warders each punched their ticket to state by winning consolation finals matches Saturday. Bussman earned a narrow 4-3 decision at 144 pounds, while Warders secured his spot with a win by fall. They join Lady Bulldogs Leila Schoonmaker and Karleigh Throm in advancing to state competition.

In Nebraska, Southern High celebrated two state champions at the Nebraska State Wrestling Championships in Omaha. Wyatt Forney claimed his title with an 11-5 decision, and Drake Troxel followed with a 13-11 victory to earn his championship. In total, seven Southern Raiders advanced to state.

Sub-State Basketball Pairings Announced

Postseason basketball action tips off this week with several area teams in action across multiple classifications.

In 2A/3A sub-state play, the Marysville boys are the No. 11 seed and will travel to face No. 6 seed Jefferson West Thursday at 6 p.m. The Marysville girls, also an 11 seed, open at No. 6 Oskaloosa Friday at 6 p.m. Both games will air live on KNDY AM 1570/FM 94.1.

The Valley Heights girls earned the No. 3 seed in the Mission Valley 2A sub-state and will host No. 14 seed Washington County Thursday at 6 p.m., with live coverage on KNDY-FM 95.5. The Valley Heights boys are the No. 17 seed and will not play. The Washington County boys, seeded 12th, travel to face No. 5 Valley Falls Friday at 6 p.m.

In 1A Division II, Hanover and Axtell boys and girls, along with Linn and Blue Valley girls, received first-round byes. The Blue Valley boys defeated Chase County 62-15 Monday and advance to face No. 3 seed Tescott on Saturday. The Linn boys rolled past Wakefield 77-30 Monday and will face Thunder Ridge on Saturday at 2 p.m., with that game airing live on KNDY-FM 95.5 and KD Country 94 in Beloit.

In 1A Division I, the Frankfort boys hosted Centralia on Monday, with Centralia advancing after a 73-65 win. The Centralia boys will face Olpe on Saturday. The Centralia girls received a bye, while the Frankfort girls travel to Canton-Galva Tuesday at 6 p.m.

In Nebraska sub-district action, Diller-Odell and Southern boys teams tip off Tuesday. The Griffins face Lewiston at 7 p.m. at Falls City Sacred Heart, while the Southern Raiders host Meridian at 7 p.m.
