Waterville Man Sentenced to 20 Years for 2024 Murder

WATERVILLE, Kan. — A Waterville man has been sentenced to 20 years and five months in prison in connection with the 2024 murder of a Blue Rapids resident, Marshall County Attorney Brad Lippert announced.

James Winkenwader received the sentence last week in Marshall County District Court on an amended charge of second-degree murder. He was also sentenced on separate charges of aggravated assault and possession of methamphetamine.

The sentencing follows Winkenwader’s no contest plea in October to the charges spanning three separate cases. In exchange for the plea, a fourth case was dismissed.

Winkenwader was originally charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 36-year-old Camoran Shoptese on July 4, 2024. Authorities later discovered Shoptese’s dismembered body at a farm near Waterville.
