SEDGWICK COUNTY — A Wichita man accused of the fatal shooting of his infant daughter is scheduled to return to court on Thursday.
Michael Tejeda, 25, will appear in Judge Chrystal Krier’s courtroom for an arraignment hearing, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office. Tejeda remains in custody on a $500,000 bond following his arrest earlier this year.
Charges Filed
According to the District Attorney’s office, Tejeda was charged in March with:
- First-degree murder
- Two counts of aggravated endangering a child
- Criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon
Details of the Incident
The charges stem from an incident that occurred on the evening of February 28. Just after 8:30 p.m., Wichita police responded to a report of a shooting at a residence in the 2200 block of South Santa Fe.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered a 1-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body, according to Wichita Police spokesman Andrew Ford. Emergency Medical Services transported the child to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:27 p.m.
Ongoing Investigation
Following an investigation into the shooting, police arrested Tejeda.
Authorities reported that another child was present in the home at the time of the shooting and was subsequently placed in police protective custody. The mother of the children was not at the residence when the incident occurred; she was interviewed by investigators and released.
