WESTMORELAND, Kan. — The 2nd Judicial District Nominating Commission has announced it is accepting nominations to fill a vacancy for the position of district magistrate judge in Pottawatomie County.The judicial seat became available following the passing of District Magistrate Judge Erich Campbell on September 18.
Justice Caleb Stegall, the Supreme Court departmental justice overseeing the 2nd Judicial District, confirmed that the commission is seeking qualified candidates to fill the unexpired term. The 2nd Judicial District encompasses Jackson, Jefferson, Pottawatomie, and Wabaunsee counties.
Application Process and Deadlines
Justice Stegall noted that while individuals may apply directly or be nominated by others, all nominations must be submitted on an official nomination form and include the nominee’s signature.
- Submission Deadline: All nominations and supporting documents must be received by noon on Tuesday, December 16.
- Interviews: The nominating commission will convene to interview nominees on January 9 at the Pottawatomie County Courthouse in Westmoreland.
Selection and Retention
Following the interviews, the commission will appoint a nominee to fill the vacancy. The selected judge will serve one year in office before facing a retention vote in the next general election.
If the voters retain the judge, the incumbent will then go on to serve a standard four-year term.
