๐ŸŸ๏ธ Seneca Council Approves Turf Field for New Ballpark Project

The Seneca City Council is moving ahead with plans for a new ball field at the former golf course property, south of Branch Street, following key decisions made at their November 5th meeting.

Turf Field Approved After Debate

The most significant decision centered on the field material, with Council members debating between dirt and turf. After a lengthy discussion and reviewing cost figures presented by AHRS Construction, the Council approved a turf field on a 4-2 vote. The estimated cost for the turf option is approximately $300,000. Council members Steve Bennett and Joe Schmelzle cast the dissenting votes.

Project Details Finalized

In addition to the field surface, the Council unanimously approved two design specifications for the project:

  • A 24-inch backstop.
  • Extending the netting past the dugouts, which carries an additional cost of $33,000.

The Council also unanimously opted for an open dugout design over a closed one.

Funding and Location

Discussions on project funding indicated a preference to avoid property tax dollars. City Administrator Steve Brooks proposed that the majority of the funding come from the electrical fund, with the remainder drawn from the capital improvement fund. Mayor Joe Mitchell and other Council members favored utilizing sales tax funds.

The new field will replace the existing one on 11th Street, where a new electric substation and generators are slated to be located.
