Suspect in Custody After Stabbing K9 Officer During Barricade Situation

WYANDOTTE COUNTY, KS—A Kansas K9 is recovering and a suspect is in custody following a standoff early Tuesday morning that saw the law enforcement animal stabbed. The incident, which took place in the 900 block of Riverview, is being investigated by local authorities.

Just before 4 a.m. Tuesday, Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department officers responded to a disturbance call. The caller reported that a family member, who had been involved in a prior assault with a knife, had returned to the home. When officers attempted to make contact with the man, he barricaded himself inside the residence.

The Shawnee Police Department was called to assist, bringing in K9 Dagger, a Belgian Malinois. When law enforcement entered the home to make an arrest, the suspect stabbed the K9 officer. Dagger was quickly taken to a local veterinarian for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. The K9 has been with the Shawnee Police Department since 2023.

The standoff concluded at 7:30 a.m. when the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. He faces multiple allegations, including charges related to the stabbing of the K9.

This incident falls under “Bane’s Law,” a 2024 Kansas law that increases penalties for harming law enforcement animals, including horses. The felony crime is punishable by a minimum of 90 days in jail and a minimum fine of $10,000. The bill was initially vetoed by Governor Kelly but was passed after being overridden by the House (105-20) and the Senate (29-10).
