Due to severe storms including large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall on Aug. 18-19 in Wyandotte County, Governor Laura Kelly issued a verbal state of disaster emergency proclamation on Friday, Aug. 21, due to damages from severe storms.
Multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms accompanied by strong damaging straight-line winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall impacted areas of central and eastern Kansas, late on August 18, 2026, into the early morning of August 19. Wyandotte County sustained significant impacts due to strong storms resulting in vegetive debris, damage to utility infrastructure, essential facilities, residences, and businesses.
“We know the people of Wyandotte County are facing a long road to recovery after these devastating storms,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “Our priority is making sure residents have the support and resources they need to safely clean up, restore power, and begin rebuilding. The State of Kansas will continue working closely with local officials and emergency responders to help this community recover.”
In partnership with their emergency support function partners, the Kansas Division of Emergency Management will continue to coordinate with Wyandotte County Emergency Management to support needs as requested.
