Governor Laura Kelly issued a verbal state of disaster emergency proclamation today, April 1 due to Red Flag fire warning beginning today into April 2 and the potential for extreme to critical wildfire conditions for portions of northwest and southwest regions of the state. This declaration allows resources to be used to provide state assistance.
“Weather conditions across Kansas are prime for wildland fires over the next couple of days,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “Kansans should remain vigilant and take extra precautions to eliminate the risk of sparking a fire to keep our firefighters and communities safe.”
The forecast predicts strong southerly winds with gusts up to 50 mph and low relative humidity which could cause wildland fires to spread rapidly with the potential for blowing dust, potentially creating brownout conditions. In addition, severe thunderstorms are possible statewide beginning this afternoon and moving across the state. There is an enhanced risk for much of the eastern two-thirds of the state, with the potential for strong winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes possible.
“April remains one of the busiest months for wildfires in Kansas,” said Bill Waln, Fire Management Officer, Kansas Forest Service. “While grass begins to green and some areas receive precipitation, strong winds can still drive fires through dormant, dry vegetation. It’s crucial for both responders and the public to stay alert and prepared.”
The Kansas Division of Emergency Management will monitor the situation to assist counties and local responders if requested.
