High Fire Danger Prompts Red Flag Warnings and Watches Across Kansas and Nebraska

Multiple Counties Under Threat as Gusty Winds and Low Humidity Create Hazardous Conditions

Residents across a vast swathe of Kansas and Nebraska are being warned of critical fire weather conditions, with Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches issued for numerous counties. The combination of strong southwest winds, low relative humidity, and unseasonably warm temperatures has created a heightened risk of rapidly spreading wildfires.

The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag Warnings for a significant portion of North Central, Northeast, and East Central Kansas, effective from noon to 8 PM CDT today, Monday, March 17th, 2025. Affected counties include Republic, Washington, Marshall, Nemaha, Brown, Cloud, Clay, Riley, Pottawatomie, Jackson, Jefferson, Ottawa, Dickinson, Geary, Morris, Wabaunsee, Shawnee, Douglas, Lyon, Osage, Franklin, Coffey, and Anderson.

“Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly,” warned the NWS. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 45 mph, with relative humidity dropping as low as 15 percent and temperatures soaring to 84 degrees.

Adding to the concern, a Fire Weather Watch has also been issued for the same Kansas regions for Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening, indicating that critical fire weather conditions are expected to persist.

Similar conditions are impacting South Central Nebraska and portions of Eastern Nebraska and Southwest Iowa. Red Flag Warnings are in effect for Adams, Clay, Fillmore, Nuckolls, Thayer, Saline, Jefferson, Gage, Johnson, Nemaha, Pawnee, and Richardson counties, with wind gusts reaching 35 mph and humidity as low as 10-11 percent.

In addition, much of Missouri and further portions of Kansas are under red flag warnings as well.

“A strong low pressure center moving across the area today and tomorrow will bring gusty southwesterly winds,” the NWS Hastings office stated. This weather pattern, coupled with dry conditions, is creating a dangerous environment for wildfires.

Residents are urged to take precautions, including avoiding outdoor burning and being vigilant about potential fire hazards. A Red Flag Warning signifies that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or imminent. A Fire Weather Watch indicates that such conditions are forecast to occur, and residents should remain alert for potential Red Flag Warnings.

Officials advise residents to listen for later forecasts and heed all warnings. Fire crews are on high alert, and residents are encouraged to report any signs of fire immediately.
