Red Flag Warning Issued for South Central Nebraska and North Central Kansas Amid High Fire Risk

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for a wide swath of South Central Nebraska and North Central Kansas, alerting residents to critical fire weather conditions expected throughout the day. The warning, in effect from noon to 9 PM CDT, encompasses 30 counties, signaling a high risk of rapidly spreading wildfires.

The affected counties include: Phillips, Smith, Jewell, Rooks, Osborne, Mitchell, Valley, Greeley, Nance, Sherman, Howard, Merrick, Polk, Dawson, Buffalo, Hall, Hamilton, York, Gosper, Phelps, Kearney, Adams, Clay, Fillmore, Furnas, Harlan, Franklin, Webster, Nuckolls, and Thayer.

“A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly,” stated a spokesperson for the National Weather Service. “The combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.”

The primary concerns driving the warning are:

  • Strong Winds: South winds are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph, with gusts potentially hitting 30 to 35 mph.
  • Low Relative Humidity: Relative humidity levels are forecast to drop as low as 12 to 20 percent, creating extremely dry conditions.

These conditions significantly increase the risk of wildfires. “Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly,” officials warned. “Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.”

Residents are urged to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid all outdoor burning.
  • Be extremely cautious with any activities that could spark a fire, such as operating machinery or discarding cigarettes.
  • Ensure that vehicles and equipment are properly maintained to prevent sparks.
  • Stay informed about local fire conditions and warnings.

The National Weather Service emphasizes the importance of preparedness during this period of heightened fire risk. Residents are advised to have a plan in place in case of a wildfire and to stay vigilant throughout the duration of the Red Flag Warning.
