Winter Storm Warning Issued for Northeast and East-Central Kansas

TOPEKA, KS – A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for a large portion of northeast and east-central Kansas, including the cities of Topeka, Manhattan, Lawrence, and Junction City. The warning, issued by the National Weather Service, is in effect from 9 PM this evening to 6 PM CST Wednesday.

The affected area includes the counties of Marshall, Nemaha, Brown, Riley, Pottawatomie, Jackson, Jefferson, Geary, Morris, Wabaunsee, Shawnee, and Douglas. In addition to the aforementioned cities, communities such as Alma, McFarland, Horton, Wamego, Alta Vista, Seneca, Frankfort, Oskaloosa, St. Marys, McLouth, Hiawatha, Harveyville, Maple Hill, Valley Falls, Council Grove, Grantville, Meriden, Eskridge, Perry, Paxico, Nortonville, Marysville, Holton, Blue Rapids, and Sabetha are also within the warning zone.

Heavy snow is expected, with total accumulations predicted between 5 and 9 inches. The National Weather Service warns that roads, particularly bridges and overpasses, will become slick and hazardous. Travel is expected to be very difficult, and the hazardous conditions could significantly impact both the Wednesday morning and evening commutes.

Residents are urged to consider delaying all travel if possible. For those who must travel, extreme caution is advised. Motorists should keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in their vehicles in case of an emergency. Up-to-date road conditions can be obtained by calling 511.
