HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. — One person was hospitalized Tuesday night following a home explosion and subsequent basement fire in Harvey County, local emergency officials reported.
Crews from Newton Fire and EMS C-Shift were dispatched to the 3000 block of Southeast 48th Street shortly after 8 p.m. following reports of an explosion.
Upon arrival, first responders located one individual suffering from burn injuries. The victim was treated at the scene before being transported by ambulance to a hospital in Wichita. An update on their condition has not yet been released.
Firefighters discovered an active fire in the basement of the residence and quickly extinguished the flames. Emergency officials noted that the house sustained moderate damage as a result of the blast and fire. No firefighters were hurt, and no pets were injured in the incident.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
The response required extensive coordination across multiple local agencies. Newton Fire and EMS was assisted at the scene by Walton Fire, Whitewater Fire, Sedgwick Fire/EMS, Halstead Fire/EMS, and the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office. Hesston Fire/EMS also stepped in to cover emergency calls within Newton while crews worked to secure the scene.
