Investigation Underway After Inmate Dies at Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility

SEDGWICK COUNTY — State and local authorities are investigating the death of a 45-year-old Wichita man who died Wednesday afternoon at the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility.

According to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), detention staff discovered the inmate—identified in booking records as Joseph Swarts—unconscious and not breathing in his cell shortly before 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

Emergency Response and Medical Intervention

Additional detention staff and on-site medical personnel immediately began life-saving measures. Emergency responders from the Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County EMS also arrived at the scene to assist. Despite ongoing efforts to revive him, Swarts was pronounced dead.

Case Background and Statistics
