Nine-mile project will expand the Turnpike to six lanes and replace two bridges in Douglas and Leavenworth counties.
WICHITA, Kan. – A major investment in the Kansas Turnpike will bring more room for travelers along nine miles of I-70 in northeast Kansas.
The Kansas Turnpike Authority has awarded a $136.6 million construction contract to Wildcat Construction Co., Inc. & Subsidiaries to widen I-70 from four to six lanes between mile markers 204.5 and 213.5 in Douglas and Leavenworth counties. The project also includes replacement of two overhead bridges.
For travelers, the work means a wider, more modern stretch of I-70 designed to serve Kansans and Turnpike customers for years to come.
“This investment is about preparing the Turnpike for the future while continuing to provide the reliable roadway our customers depend on every day,” said KTA Chief Engineer Glen Scott. “By expanding this nine-mile stretch of I-70 to three lanes in each direction, we’re creating more room for travelers by addressing congestion, safety, and future growth.”
Construction is scheduled to begin as early as March 15, 2027, and continue through June 15, 2029. The $136,624,645 contract is part of KTA’s continued investment in the Kansas Turnpike and the infrastructure connecting communities, businesses and travelers across the state.
Additional information about construction impacts and traffic changes will be shared with travelers as the project progresses.
