KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs’ postseason hopes officially vanished in a brutal final two minutes on Sunday, marked by a devastating injury to star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and a game-sealing interception thrown by his backup, Gardner Minshew. The Los Angeles Chargers defeated their bitter rivals 16-13 at a frigid Arrowhead Stadium, clinching a second straight 10-win season and celebrating a massive divisional victory.
The final, heartbreaking image for Chiefs fans was Patrick Mahomes, head draped with a white towel, being helped to the locker room late in the fourth quarter. The club later confirmed the worst: Mahomes sustained a torn ACL in his left knee and will explore surgical options, ending his season and his team’s playoff aspirations.
Late-Game Drama Seals Kansas City’s Fate
With the Chiefs trailing 16-13, two-time MVP Mahomes was attempting to sprint toward the sideline and throw the ball away when he was spun to the ground by defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand, immediately grabbing at his left knee.
“It didn’t look good,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid acknowledged after the game.
Mahomes shared his immediate reaction on social media: “Don’t know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it’s hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again.”
Backup quarterback Minshew took over, briefly sparking hope with three straight completions. However, with just 20 seconds remaining, Chargers safety Derwin James—a longtime divisional foil—leapt up to intercept Minshew’s pass intended for Travis Kelce, cementing the loss and eliminating the Chiefs (6-8) from playoff contention for the first time since 2014.
Chargers Momentum Carries the Day
The Chargers (10-4) earned the emotional victory despite their own starting quarterback, Justin Herbert, playing through a broken left hand. Los Angeles’s second-half rally was crucial, with Cameron Dicker tying the game and then drilling a 49-yard field goal in the third quarter to give the Chargers the lead for good.
Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh was effusive in his praise for his team. “It’s a ball team… Starting to think this is my favorite ball team that I’ve ever been on,” he said.
Derwin James highlighted the significance of the win: “We know what that team has done the last eight, nine years… Coming into Arrowhead Stadium and getting a win, it means a lot for out team, because we’re 5-0 in our division.”
Minshew Takes the Helm for Final Games
With Mahomes done for the year, Minshew will quarterback the Chiefs through the final three games, including a primetime Christmas night showdown with the Denver Broncos.
“I’ll do whatever the coaches ask of me,” Minshew said, “and we’ll go try to win some games.”
The team’s frustration was evident, as star tight end Kelce refused to answer questions from reporters following the loss, stating, “Sorry guys, it’s not the time.”
The Chiefs will hit the road to Nashville to take on the Tennessee Titans next Sunday, December 21st, trying to salvage a disappointing season that ended not with a bang, but with the grim reality of a devastating injury and a missed postseason. Kickoff is scheduled for noon, with pregame coverage from the Chiefs Radio Network set for 11:00 a.m. on Classic Hits Q-106.7 KQNK in Norton.
