Man Finds Possible Grenade During Lawrence Home Remodel; Bomb Squad Responds

DOUGLAS COUNTY—A Lawrence man’s home renovation took an unexpected and concerning turn Wednesday afternoon when he discovered what appeared to be a grenade hidden behind drywall.

The discovery was made in the 900 block of Iowa. Just before 1:30 p.m., the man, who was remodeling a house, called dispatchers to report the device. According to a statement from Lawrence Police, the man had the suspected grenade inside his truck when he made the call.

Lawrence Police officers quickly responded to the area and secured the scene. They took appropriate precautions by clearing the area around the vehicle and standing by until specialized assistance arrived.

Bomb experts from the Leavenworth bomb squad were called in to handle the device. Initial observations suggest the object is a type of grenade designed to expel gas and rubber balls.

The Leavenworth bomb squad took possession of the device to ensure its proper and safe disposal. No injuries were reported, and the scene was cleared after the device was safely removed.
