The Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) has announced the awarding of approximately $65,000 in grants to various Kansas nonprofit organizations, libraries, and schools dedicated to improving literacy. This funding is part of a monumental $13.2 million donation made nationwide by the Foundation in a single day, marking the largest one-day contribution in its history. The grants will support adult, family, and summer literacy programs across the 48 states where Dollar General operates.
According to a press release issued by DGLF, these grants are specifically aimed at empowering local communities within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center. The funding is intended to help these organizations launch new literacy initiatives or expand their existing programs. Recipients can utilize the funds to acquire essential resources such as new technology, books, learning materials, and educational software.
Denine Torr, executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, emphasized the Foundation’s long-standing commitment to education. “For over 30 years, the Foundation has been investing in literacy and basic education programs in our hometown communities,” Torr stated. “Today’s grant announcement is a celebration of our unwavering commitment to student and teacher success. We are grateful to all the grant recipients for their commitment to advancing education and helping students thrive.”
The grants distributed in Kansas are projected to positively impact the lives of nearly 9,000 individuals. The recipients span a diverse range of organizations, including public libraries, school districts, and nonprofits, all working to strengthen literacy within their communities.
