Wichita, KS – A Wichita woman made her initial court appearance on Monday in connection with an accidental shooting that critically injured a 4-year-old girl earlier this month. Ana Sorto Mejia, 50, was charged by Judge Shawn Elliott with one count of aggravated endangering a child.
The incident occurred just before 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 11, in the 2500 block of E. Harry, according to Wichita Police Officer Kris Gupilan. Police and first responders were dispatched to the scene following reports of a shooting.
Upon arrival, they discovered a 4-year-old girl who had sustained a single gunshot wound to her lower torso. Officer Gupilan reported that the child was immediately transported to a local hospital with critical injuries.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the child’s guardian, identified as Sorto Mejia, allegedly left a firearm unsecured. This allowed the young girl to gain access to the weapon and unintentionally shoot herself.
Sorto Mejia was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail late on the night of the incident. However, she is no longer in custody. She is scheduled to appear back in court on May 12.
The condition of the 4-year-old girl has not been recently updated.
