Multiple States Brace for Heavy Snow, High Winds, and Whiteout Conditions

TOPEKA, KS – A significant winter storm is set to impact a vast swathe of the Midwest, with blizzard warnings issued across portions of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota. The National Weather Service has issued urgent warnings, advising residents to prepare for hazardous travel conditions and potential power outages.

Kansas Faces Multiple Blizzard Threats

In Kansas, several regions are under blizzard warnings. North-central Kansas, including Phillips, Smith, and Jewell counties, along with central and east-central Nebraska, will experience blizzard conditions from 1 AM to 2 PM CDT Wednesday. Residents can expect 2 to 6 inches of snow and winds gusting up to 60 mph.

Further east, Republic, Washington, and Cloud counties will see blizzard conditions from 7 AM to 4 PM CDT Wednesday, with 2 to 4 inches of snow and similar wind speeds. Lincoln and Russell counties are under a warning from 4 AM to 1 PM CDT, with up to 2 inches of snow and gusts of 55 mph.

West-central Kansas, including Trego, Ellis, Scott, Lane, Ness, and Rush counties, will face a blizzard from 1 AM to 1 PM CDT, with 1 to 4 inches of snow and potentially damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph.

Nebraska Prepares for Widespread Whiteouts

Nebraska is also bracing for severe weather. Central, east-central, and south-central Nebraska, along with north-central Kansas, are under a blizzard warning from 1 AM to 2 PM CDT Wednesday, with 2 to 6 inches of snow and 60 mph gusts.

Northeast Nebraska, including Knox, Cedar, Antelope, Pierce, and Wayne counties, will experience blizzard conditions from 1 AM to 7 PM CDT Wednesday, with similar snow and wind forecasts.

East-central, northeast, and southeast Nebraska, along with southwest and west-central Iowa, face a blizzard warning from 7 AM to 10 PM CDT Wednesday, with 2 to 7 inches of snow and gusts up to 65 mph.

Central Nebraska, including Loup, Garfield, Wheeler and Custer counties, and Holt county, will face a blizzard from 1 AM to 2 PM CDT, with 3 to 5 inches of snow and 60 MPH gusts.

Iowa and Surrounding States Brace for Heavy Snow and High Winds

In Iowa, northern and western regions are under a blizzard warning from 5 AM to 10 PM CDT Wednesday, with 2 to 10 inches of snow and gusts up to 65 mph. Southwest and west-central Iowa, along with northeast Nebraska and southeast South Dakota, are under a blizzard warning from 4 AM to 7 PM CDT Wednesday, with 4 to 9 inches of snow and 60 mph gusts.

Travel Warnings and Safety Precautions

The National Weather Service has issued strong warnings against travel during the blizzard conditions. “Travel should be restricted to emergencies only,” officials stated. “If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.”

Residents are advised to check road conditions by calling 511 and to prepare for potential power outages due to strong winds and heavy snow. Livestock owners are urged to take precautions to protect their animals from the harsh conditions.

The combination of heavy snow and high winds is expected to create whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
