BYU Dominates No. 23 Kansas in 91-57 Rout

PROVO, Utah – The No. 23 Kansas Jayhawks suffered a crushing 91-57 defeat at the hands of BYU on Tuesday night at the Marriott Center. Despite a double-double from Hunter Dickinson (12 points, 14 rebounds), the Jayhawks couldn’t contain the Cougars’ hot shooting and aggressive defense.

BYU (18-8, 9-6 Big 12) secured their third consecutive win, led by Richie Saunders’ 22 points, Trevin Knell’s 15, and Mawot Mag’s 13. The trio combined for 11 three-pointers, contributing significantly to BYU’s dominant performance.

Kansas (17-9, 8-7) struggled throughout the game, trailing by as many as 38 points in the second half. Dickinson led the Jayhawks in scoring, while David Coit added 11 points off the bench. The 34-point loss tied for the largest defeat under head coach Bill Self.

BYU’s efficient shooting and relentless defense were on full display from the opening tip. A 14-2 run early in the first half, fueled by Mag and Keba Keita, gave the Cougars a commanding 22-7 lead.

Although Kansas briefly narrowed the gap to 25-17 after a six-minute scoring drought by BYU, the Cougars responded with a barrage of three-pointers, including back-to-back shots from Saunders and Knell, to take a 46-26 lead into halftime.

The second half saw no improvement for the Jayhawks, who committed 15 turnovers and allowed BYU to shoot 52% from the field. BYU connected on 14 three-pointers throughout the game, showcasing their offensive firepower. Notably, BYU had assists on all 15 of their first-half field goals.

A key moment in the game came late in the first half when, after a six-minute scoring drought, BYU’s Mag and Saunders hit back-to-back three-pointers, extending their lead back to double digits. A telling statistic revealed that Kansas has not led at any point in their last 80 minutes of play.

The loss marks the second consecutive defeat for Kansas, the first time they have suffered back-to-back losses this season.

Looking ahead, Kansas will host Oklahoma State on Saturday, while BYU will travel to Arizona.
