OMAHA, Neb. – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for a large swathe of southwest Iowa and eastern Nebraska, stretching from Tabor, Iowa, to Lincoln, Nebraska, and encompassing numerous cities including Omaha, Council Bluffs, and Bellevue. The advisory, issued by the National Weather Service, is in effect from 9 p.m. this evening to 9 a.m. CST Saturday.
The affected counties in Nebraska covers Platte, Colfax, Dodge, Washington, Butler, Saunders, Douglas, Sarpy, Seward, Lancaster, Cass, Otoe, Saline, Jefferson, Gage, Johnson, Nemaha, Pawnee, and Richardson counties.
The primary concern is freezing drizzle, which is expected to create a thin layer of ice. Accumulations are forecast to range from 0.03 to 0.08 of an inch. This may seem like a small amount, but even a thin glaze of ice can create hazardous travel conditions.
The National Weather Service warns that untreated surfaces will become slick, making driving particularly dangerous. Motorists are urged to slow down and exercise extreme caution. Pedestrians should also be careful, especially when navigating stairs, sidewalks, and driveways, as these surfaces could be icy and slippery.
For the latest road conditions in Nebraska, drivers can dial 511. The National Weather Service advises residents to be prepared for slippery roads and to allow extra time for travel.
