Kyle Schwarber contributed significantly to the Philadelphia Phillies’ commanding 11-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday, recording two hits and driving in three runs. Garrett Stubbs also shone brightly, achieving a career-high with four hits. The momentum shifted in the third inning when Stubbs initiated the scoring with a triple to the right-field corner, followed by Schwarber’s double to right-center, which set the stage for Alec Bohm’s two-out hit that brought Schwarber home, establishing a 2-0 lead for the Phillies.
Schwarber continued to excel, adding to his RBI tally with a grounder during a bases-loaded situation in the fourth inning and later contributing a single that rounded off a three-run sixth inning. The Phillies further extended their lead in the eighth inning, scoring five runs, which included Bohm’s two-run single and Nick Castellanos’ impressive two-run homer, marking his 17th of the season. Although Stubbs was in pursuit of a home run to complete the cycle, he settled for a single in the eighth and was subsequently hit by a pitch in the ninth.
On the mound, Kolby Allard (2-0) delivered a solid performance, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out five batters. In contrast, Kansas City’s Seth Lugo (14-8) struggled, giving up six runs and 11 hits, marking a concerning trend as he has allowed at least four runs in five of his last seven starts. The Phillies demonstrated their offensive prowess by going 7 for 14 with runners in scoring position, amassing a total of 45 hits and outscoring the Royals 26-12 over the three-game series. Meanwhile, the Royals saw solo home runs from Bobby Witt Jr., Maikel Garcia, and MJ Melendez, and Tyler Gentry made his major league debut, flying out as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.
The Royals will play a double-header Monday in Cleveland against the AL Central leading Guardians.
