Bobby Witt Jr. delivered a grand slam, marking his fourth hit of the evening, which concluded a remarkable six-run rally for the Kansas City Royals in the eighth inning. This performance led the Royals to an 8-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night. Witt connected with a low slider from pitcher John Brebbia, sending the ball soaring into the left-center stands for his 19th home run and third career grand slam. In addition to his home run, Witt also recorded two singles and a double, contributing significantly to the Royals’ triumph and extending the White Sox’s franchise-record losing streak to 15 games.
With Kansas City trailing 5-2 as they entered the eighth inning, Hunter Renfroe and MJ Melendez ignited the comeback with consecutive solo home runs off reliever Steven Wilson. Following a hit-by-pitch on Adam Frazier and a walk issued to Michael Massey by Brebbia, Witt stepped up to the plate and delivered the decisive blow. This victory improved the Royals’ record to 58-49, keeping them in contention for the final American League Wild Card spot. Meanwhile, the White Sox, now at 27-82, find themselves 55 games under .500 for the first time in their history, surpassing the dismal record of the 1962 New York Mets through the same number of games.
The White Sox initially took the lead in the first inning with an RBI single from Gavin Sheets. The Royals equalized in the third when Witt sprinted home on a ground ball from Salvador Perez. Luis Robert Jr. contributed three hits and an RBI for Chicago, while Andrew Vaughn added a solo home run. Despite a two-run sixth inning that briefly put the White Sox ahead, they ultimately faltered, marking their 27th blown save of the season. Chris Stratton, one of four relievers for Kansas City, secured the win by recording four outs, while James McArthur closed the game with a perfect ninth inning, earning his 18th save.
