Brenton Doyle hit his fourth home run in five games, while Austin Gomber secured his first win in seven weeks as the Colorado Rockies defeated the Kansas City Royals 3-1 on Saturday night. Gomber allowed only one run on six hits in seven innings, striking out three, and earning his first victory since May 15. He outperformed Royals ace Seth Lugo, with Ryan McMahon contributing three hits to help Colorado secure its third consecutive win.
Royals manager Matt Quatraro praised Gomber’s performance, highlighting his effective mix of fastballs and breaking pitches that kept the Kansas City hitters off balance. Lugo, on the other hand, went six innings, allowing five hits and three runs, two of which were earned. He struck out five and walked two. Doyle’s 11th homer of the season came in the second inning after Brendan Rodgers reached base on a throwing error by Royals third baseman Maikel Garcia.
Doyle’s home run ended Lugo’s 13-inning scoreless streak and resulted in his first road loss of the season. Vinnie Pasquantino homered for Kansas City, and Hunter Renfroe contributed three hits, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win for the Royals. In the ninth inning, Victor Vodnik retired pinch-hitter Michael Massey on an infield grounder to earn his first save, sealing the victory for the Rockies.
The 3-game series between the Royals and Rockies will come to an end on Sunday afternoon with a scheduled first pitch at 2:10 p.m. Brady Singer, with a record of 4-5 and a 3.05 ERA, will take the mound for Kansas City, while Tanner Gordon, who is making his MLB debut, will be pitching for the Rockies. Pre-game coverage on Classic Hits KQNK is set to start at 1:30 p.m.
