Salvador Perez played a crucial role in a five-run rally during the eighth inning, securing a go-ahead double down the left-field line. This pivotal moment led the Kansas City Royals to a 5-1 victory over the Miami Marlins, ultimately clinching the series win. Angel Zerpa, who replaced Brady Singer, managed to get the final two outs of the eighth inning, while James McArthur closed out the game in the ninth.
Prior to the eighth inning, Kansas City struggled to score against Valente Bellozo and the Miami bullpen. However, Bobby Witt Jr. kickstarted the rally with a triple off Huascar Brazoban, followed by a tying single from Vinnie Pasquantino. With a stolen base by pinch runner Dairon Blanco, Salvador Perez’s double secured the lead for the Royals. Nick Loftin and Freddy Fermin also contributed with an RBI single and two more runs, respectively, providing McArthur with some cushion.
Despite a strong performance by Brady Singer, who allowed only one run, he has faced challenges with run support throughout the season. On the other hand, Valente Bellozo impressed in his MLB debut for Miami, pitching five solid innings. Although he encountered a bit of trouble in the second inning, Bellozo showcased his skills by retiring the final 10 hitters he faced. The victory marked a significant turnaround for the Royals, who had struggled to score in recent games.
Kansas City opens a 4-game series with the AL Central Division leading Cleveland Guardians on Thursday. First pitch from Kauffman Stadium is set for 7:10 p.m., with pregame coverage on Classic Hits KQNK beginning at 6:30 p.m. Michael Wacha (4-6, 4.07 ERA) will start for KC, opposite of Ben Lively (7-3, 3.03 ERA).
