Royals Pitcher Wacha Suffers Hand Injury In Final Spring Training Game

In a surprising turn of events, Kansas City Royals right-hander Michael Wacha suffered an injury to his pitching hand during the final inning of spring training. As the team was preparing to leave Arizona, Wacha was struck on his middle finger by a line drive hit by Salvador Perez. Immediately feeling the impact, Wacha clutched his hand while manager Matt Quatraro rushed to his side. X-rays will be conducted to assess the extent of the injury and determine the next course of action.

Despite the unfortunate incident, the Royals remain optimistic about Wacha’s condition. Quatraro assured reporters that they believe he will recover from the injury. However, to gain a clearer understanding of the situation, a series of tests and X-rays will be conducted, with the results expected to be available in the coming days. Wacha’s role in the team’s revamped rotation is crucial, as he was signed as a veteran presence to bolster the pitching staff with a two-year, $32 million contract during free agency.

It is worth noting that the injury to Wacha comes on the heels of another setback for the Royals. Second baseman Michael Massey is likely to start the season on the injured list due to back tightness. He has been sidelined from baseball activities and will remain in Arizona while the team travels to Springdale, Arkansas for an exhibition game. The Royals are set to face their Double-A affiliate, Northwest Arkansas, before returning to Kansas City for the start of the regular season. Their opening series against division rival Minnesota Twins is scheduled for Thursday, and the team is eager to kick off the season on a positive note.
