NORTHWEST KANSAS — Strong winds sweeping across northwest Kansas on Sunday afternoon are being blamed for two separate crashes along Interstate 70 that left three people injured, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP).

Hays, KS – A 37-year-old WaKeeney man, identified as Julio Caesar Villarreal, was tragically killed Sunday after being struck by a semi-truck on Interstate 70 west of Hays.

A traffic stop on Interstate 70 in Geary County, KS, on June 2 led to a major drug bust with $4 million worth of narcotics seized, including 3,280 pounds of marijuana and 260 pounds of cocaine. Two California residents were arrested as part of a multi-jurisdictional effort targeting drug trafficking.

The Kansas Department of Transportation is making headway in reopening roads after a severe storm caused significant closures. While interstate highways in northeast Kansas are open, I-70 remains closed from Hays to Manhattan. An accident in Trego County resulted in injuries when a car attempted an illegal U-turn on Interstate 70, leading to a head-on collision with a semi-truck. The car's driver, Ralph Harding, was treated for injuries, while the truck driver, Dilshod Usmonov, was unharmed. Harding was wearing his seatbelt during the incident.
