RILEY COUNTY, Kan. ā Volunteer firefighters across Riley County remained busy Saturday as crews responded to multiple wildfires, while officials warned that dangerous fire conditions will persist into Sunday.
According to an update released at 5:30 p.m. by Riley County Fire District #1, firefighters spent the day monitoring and containing several fires across the area.
The Wildcat Creek Road Fire remains under close observation. Officials say smoke will continue to be visible as trees and logs burn, but the affected areas are surrounded by already burned ground, limiting the risk of further spread. Crews have been inspecting the site throughout the day and will continue monitoring conditions.
A separate 50-acre fire north of Tuttle Creek Lake is now reported to be 95% contained. The cause of the fire remains unknown. Firefighters were able to protect one home and two outbuildings that were threatened by the blaze, with no structures lost. Crews are currently conducting backburning operations to eliminate remaining fuel sources and prevent flare-ups into the evening.
Meanwhile, the Daniels Drive Fire has been fully contained. Most units have cleared the scene, though one heavy brush truck remains out of service due to needed repairs. Officials said this fire was a rekindle that spread onto a neighboring property.
Fire officials emphasized that hazardous conditions will continue, citing dry vegetation, strong winds, and above-average temperatures. As a result, no outdoor burning will be permitted on Sunday, March 22.
Authorities are also urging the public to take precautions, including properly disposing of smoking materials and never throwing cigarettes from vehicles, which can quickly ignite fires in current conditions.
Fire District officials expressed gratitude to the volunteer firefighters, as well as the community members and families who support their efforts during ongoing fire responses.
