USPS Considers Relocation of Mahaska Post Office Amid Lease Concerns

MAHASKA, Kan. — The United States Postal Service is exploring options to relocate its Mahaska retail operations as it faces the potential loss of its current lease.

A postcard notification is being sent to residents regarding the future of the Mahaska Post Office, currently located at 212 N. Main Street. The agency says it is seeking a new location within a two-mile radius of the existing site to maintain local service access.

According to USPS Real Estate Specialist Greg Shelton, several relocation possibilities are under consideration. These include leasing an existing building of approximately 1,550 square feet with at least 12 parking spaces, leasing land to install a modular postal facility, purchasing land for new construction, or establishing a smaller retail-only site of about 675 square feet with a minimum of nine parking spaces.

The Postal Service emphasized that retail services will continue at the current Mahaska location until the lease expires. If necessary, services could be temporarily relocated while a new facility is prepared.

Community members are encouraged to provide feedback on the proposed relocation. Written comments will be accepted for the next 45 days and can be mailed to: United States Postal Service, Attn: Mahaska KS Relocation, P.O. Box 27497, Greensboro, NC 27498-1103.

USPS officials noted that the agency does not receive tax dollars for its operating expenses and instead relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations.
