MARION COUNTY, KS – July 16, 2025 – The Marion County Health Department has issued a public health alert after identifying a suspected case of rabies in a feral (stray) cat at the Marion County Lake.
According to a media release from the health department, the cat was observed in a residential area near the lake on the evening of Wednesday, July 9, exhibiting concerning behaviors, including aggression, confusion, and stilted movement. While the animal was ultimately disposed of, it was unable to be tested for rabies.
Rabies is a severe and often fatal viral disease that can affect all mammals, including humans. It is primarily transmitted through bites or scratches from an infected animal, or when saliva or brain tissue from a rabid animal comes into contact with broken skin, eyes, nose, or mouth.
Though this particular animal no longer poses a direct threat, the Marion County Health Department is urging the public to remain vigilant and take the following precautions:
- Avoid contact with wild or feral animals.
- Ensure all pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
- Report any suspicious or aggressive animal behavior to the County Sheriff’s Office.
For individuals with questions regarding potential rabies exposure, the Marion County Health Department can be reached at 620-382-2550.
