Valley Heights USD 498 Secures Grant for Safety Enhancements

Valley Heights USD 498 has been awarded a $390,034 School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP) matching grant to significantly enhance the district’s safety and security infrastructure. The district will pay 25 percent of the grant, or $97,507.

The funding will be allocated to implement critical updates, including:

  • Modernization of the security system
  • Installation of key fob entrances for controlled access
  • Improved signage throughout the district
  • Addition of protective barriers (ballards)
  • Updates to intercom and bell systems

Superintendent Sean Spoonts emphasized the importance of these upgrades in ensuring the safety and well-being of students, staff, and visitors. He expressed gratitude for the grant award, which will address critical security needs and align with the district’s unwavering commitment to safety.

A Strategic Approach to Safety

The journey to enhance district safety began in August 2023 with a four-phase process:

  1. Needs Assessment and Collaboration: In Fall 2023, the district convened meetings with local law enforcement, EMTs, and county management to assess current security needs and establish collaborative partnerships. A comprehensive Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) evaluation was also conducted to identify areas for improvement.
  2. Comprehensive Security Planning: Based on the CPTED evaluation, the district developed a comprehensive plan to address identified security weaknesses, serving as a roadmap for future upgrades.
  3. Securing Resources: During Summer 2024, Valley Heights USD 498 successfully applied for the SVPP grant to secure funding for the necessary equipment and resources outlined in the security plan.
  4. Implementation: With the grant award, the district will now proceed with the implementation of the new security measures and initiatives.
