The KSHSAA high school football playoffs begin this week, featuring critical matchups across multiple brackets. In Eight-Man Division II, notable games include Frankfort at Thunder Ridge and Axtell hosting St. Johns Tipton. Other classes are in action, with key games like Marysville vs. Nickerson being broadcast live.

The Axtell Eagles defeated the Cunningham Wildcats 57-39 in the 1A DII Boys High School Basketball State Championship, showcasing strong offense and defense. Brandon Schmelzle led Axtell with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Cunningham struggled offensively, shooting only 22.8%, which contributed to their first loss of the season.

The Axtell Eagles defeated the Dighton Hornets 57-51 in a thrilling 1A Division II State Quarterfinal, showcasing 11 ties and lead changes. Brandon Schmelzle led Axtell with 15 points. Axtell’s rebounding and second-chance points were key, setting up a championship clash against the undefeated Cunningham Wildcats.

The Axtell Eagles triumphed over the Hutchinson-Central Christian Cougars with a 66-46 win in the 1A Division II State Tournament. Led by Logan Sandmann's double-double, Axtell asserted control throughout, showcasing strong rebounding. Central Christian struggled offensively and concluded their season, while Axtell advances to face Dighton in the semifinals.

Axtell dominated Victoria 50-0 in the Eight-Player Division II championship, securing their fourth consecutive state title and extending their win streak to 52 games. Senior quarterback Brandon Schmelzle led the Eagles, executing innovative plays and contributing both rushing and passing touchdowns. Victoria struggled to capitalize on opportunities, finishing their season at 12-1.

FM 95.5 will cover Valley Heights, Hanover, Frankfort girls, and Axtell boys. Valley Heights girls face Wichita County, Axtell boys play Beloit St. John’s/Tipton. Hanover girls take on Bucklin, and Frankfort girls compete against St. John Hudson, with ongoing live coverage of the games on FM 95.5.
