Hays and Russell City Leaders to Hold Joint Meeting on Regional Water Supply Project

RUSSELL, KAN. – The Hays City Commission and the Russell City Council are set to hold a joint special meeting on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, to discuss a critical regional water supply initiative. The meeting, focused on the R9 Water Supply Project, will take place at 4:30 p.m. at Russell City Hall, located at 133 W. 8th Street.

The work study session will cover key aspects of the ongoing project, which is designed to provide a long-term, sustainable water source for both communities. The agenda for the meeting includes updates on the R9 Water Supply Project, a discussion on the benefits of a joint Cedar Bluff release, and a review of the latest litigation surrounding the project.

The R9 Water Supply Project is a joint effort between the two cities to secure a new water source to supplement their existing supplies, which are vulnerable to drought. The initiative has received significant attention and funding, including a recent Build Kansas grant, but has also faced legal challenges.

The meeting is open to the public and offers an opportunity for residents to stay informed on the progress of this vital infrastructure project.
