A fatal fire occurred on Christmas night in Derby, Kansas.
Around 11:00 PM on Wednesday, a passerby walking their dog noticed flames coming from the back window of a home in the 700 block of E. Meadowlark. They immediately contacted emergency services.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and discovered a man in his 70s deceased inside the residence. Sadly, a pet cat also perished in the fire.
The victim was believed to be alone at the time of the incident. While there were initial reports of another resident, authorities confirmed that person was accounted for.
The fire caused smoke damage to the adjacent unit of the duplex.
Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire. The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
