Michael Wacha pitched a gem, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 2-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. The win completed a series sweep and solidified the Royals’ position in the AL wild-card race.
Wacha, now with 100 career wins, tossed seven innings of four-hit ball, striking out seven and walking only one. His defense also played a crucial role, turning two double plays and throwing out a runner at the plate.
Kris Bubic and Lucas Erceg combined for two scoreless innings of relief, with Erceg earning his 11th save.
The Royals’ offense capitalized on their opportunities. Garrett Hampson and Salvador Perez drove in runs to provide the necessary scoring.
Minnesota’s Simeon Woods Richardson struggled, allowing two runs in five innings. The Twins’ offense was unable to generate much against Wacha and the Royals’ bullpen.
With the win, the Royals extended their lead over the Twins in the AL Central to 2.5 games, strengthening their position in the wild-card race.
