Kansas City Current Falls 2-1 at Gotham FC

HARRISON, N.J. (Aug. 14, 2026) — The Kansas City Current (9-8-3, 30 pts., 7th place) scored a historic first half goal but ultimately fell 2-1 against Gotham FC (13-3-4, 43 pts., 1st place) Friday night at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, NJ. Forward Amelia White scored after just 22 seconds on a well-placed assist from midfielder Croix Bethune, tying the NWSL record for the quickest goal in regular season history. However, Gotham notched two unanswered first half goals and, despite several quality scoring opportunities from the Current, the hosts emerged victorious.

White now shares the record of fastest goal from kickoff with teammate Michelle Cooper, who returned to the pitch for the first time in 42 days as a second-half substitute. Midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta reached a major milestone in the 35th minute, becoming just the 20th player in NWSL history to reach 15,000 career regular season minutes. Midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo returned to the starting lineup for the first time in 420 days after being activated from maternity leave earlier this season.

“We stepped on the pitch with good mentality, a good road mentality,” said head coach Chris Armas. “These games, the ones against Gotham…they will prepare us for the playoff push, and ultimately the playoffs. But there’s a lot of fight from our team to stay in it, to keep pushing. I’m proud of the group for that, for sure.”

The Current went ahead in an instant, winning the ball within the first 15 seconds and breaking ahead towards goal. Midfielder Debinha sprung Kansas City forward from just behind midfield, squaring a ball for Bethune. With space to operate, Bethune took a touch and curled a perfectly weighted pass between multiple defenders and behind the Gotham back line for White. The rookie burst ahead with a forward touch and clipped the ball over sprawling Gotham goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger with a left-footed shot, which rolled into the lower right corner.

The goal marked White’s second of the season and her second career regular season goal. It also vaulted White into a tie for the fastest goal from kickoff in NWSL history alongside Cooper, who also scored her historic goal 22 seconds after kickoff as a rookie in 2023.

Bethune picked up her ninth assist of the regular season on Kansas City’s early breakthrough. Bethune already holds the Current’s single-season franchise record for assists and now sits just one shy from matching the NWSL all-time record for single season assists. Bethune (2024, Washington) holds that record alongside Tobin Heath, who record 10 assists for Portland in 2016.

Gotham leveled the contest in the 13th minute through midfielder Midge Purce, who sent a strike into the bottom left corner. Berger denied a close-range effort from forward Haley Hopkins in the 20th minute to keep the match level as both sides continued to generate scoring opportunities. As an end-to-end first half played out, Gotham went ahead just before halftime with a goal from forward Sam Kerr to take a one-goal lead they would not relinquish.

Kansas City pressed for an equalizer throughout the second half with several strong looks and remained within striking distance as goalkeeper Marissa Jordan turned in an eight-save performance – a new career high – but Gotham ultimately took the 2-1 victory. Defender Izzy Rodriguez equaled the club record for consecutive regular season matches played with 46 with her start while fellow defender Gabrielle Robinson made her 50th career regular season start. DiBernardo made her first start since June 20, 2025, in her seventh appearance of the 2026 campaign.
