WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State men’s basketball head coach Paul Mills announced the hiring of Josh Eilert as a new assistant coach Tuesday afternoon.
Eilert replaces the assistant coach position that was previously held by Quincy Acy.
“Quincy Acy was a wonderful addition to our staff when I became the head coach,” Mills said. “He’s a phenomenal person and teacher and I couldn’t be happier for him as he leaves Wichita to spend more time with his family and pursue other opportunities.”
Eilert is no stranger to the state of Kansas and college coaching with more than two decades of experience at the Power 4 level. He comes to Wichita State after a season at Utah where he was an assistant coach, and even closed the 2024-25 season as the interim head coach for the final six games. Eilert ventured out to Salt Lake City after spending the previous 17 seasons at West Virginia (2007-24) in various capacities, most recently serving as the interim head coach for the 2023-24 season. During his time in Morgantown, the Mountaineers earned 11 NCAA Tournament berths – including a Final Four appearance in 2010 and five NCAA Sweet 16s.

He is a coach that other coaches and administrators have raved about when I spoke with people who have seen Josh’s work firsthand. He comes here as a proven teacher and leader. The more time I was able to visit with Coach Eilert and speak to others about him, it was evident to me and our staff that he was a person we wanted to be a part of what we are building here in Wichita. In his time at WVU, Eilert did a little bit of everything from working with the wings and post players, on and off-campus recruiting, scouting, film prep, scheduling, day-to-day internal operations, travel, camps, film exchange, fundraising and countless other special projects.
He was recognized by Silver Waves Media and named to its Top-50 Notable Division I Support Staff list in 2021.
The Kansas native officially moved into an assistant coach position for the 2022-23 season before being appointed the interim head coach for the 2023-24 season after the departure of long-time head coach Bob Huggins.
Prior to joining the Mountaineer staff, Eilert was a graduate assistant at his alma mater (Kansas State) from 2005-07. He spent his first season as a GA under his head coach Jim Wooldridge before serving under Huggins for the 2006-07 season.
Eilert played two seasons at K-State from 2002-04 after transferring in from Cloud County CC where he was a two-year letter winner and one-year starter. While in Manhattan, Eilert was a stalwart in the classroom earning Academic All-Big-12 as a senior with four-straight Big-12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selections and was honored with the Keith Amerson Academic Award. In addition, the former forward also earned KJCAA Academic All-America honors his sophomore year at Cloud County CC.
A native of Osborne, Kan., Eilert earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing (2004) before obtaining his master’s degree in college student personnel/intercollegiate athletics Kansas State in 2007.
Eilert and his wife, Brandi, and have two sons, Brendan and Tristan, and a daughter, Emri.
